I had a blast with this lesson. If you have students who play Minecraft, try using the game to activate prior knowledge. Minecraft has biomes that mostly reflect the real world. There is an education version that allows students to experiment with different chemical combinations.
The option to do three different assignments is helpful. There's always at least one that I feel I can complete. I chose to do the thank you notes in award letter form because I'm familiar with the format. Blurb from the padlet:
